Jake Johnson claims his mum Eve Johnson had a ‘gut feeling’ before a shooting at his school.
The actor, who is famed for playing Nick Miller on New Girl alongside Zooey Deschanel, doesn’t often talk about the incident as he finds it so confusing.
However, while speaking on the Dope As Usual podcast he shared how he remembers the day.
‘I was sitting next to my mum. I was in 4th grade. Out of nowhere my mother turned to me and goes: “You’re not going to school tomorrow”.’
He continued: ‘And I go “huh”. With my mum growing up, when she said something that’s just how it went down.’
Although he initially accepted that he wouldn’t be going, Jake, who was around nine or 10 years old, said that he reminded his mum that the class was going on a field trip to Little Vitamin, and he wanted to go.
Jake recalled that once Eve clarified that he wouldn’t be entering the school, she permitted his attendance.
‘The next day, May 20 1988, a woman walks into my elementary school through the door that my class was in. I used to get into a lot of trouble as a kid and I used to always talk so the teacher pushed me in the far right corner so I sat away from the other kids, and I was right by the door,’ Jake explained.
‘A woman walked into the school wearing a robe and nothing underneath. I know me, I would have commented. I would have said something. I would have tried to show off.’
‘She shot seven kids and killed one of them,’ he stated.
Laurie Dann, who had mental illness, killed Nick Corwin, who was aged just eight, while he was at elementary school in Chicago’s Illinois. She also set fire to a house, took a family hostage, and tried to poison acquaintances. Later that day, she committed suicide.
Jake regularly asks his mum for answers and she tells him: ‘I don’t know. I had a feeling in my gut if your kid goes to school today, you’re never going to see him again.’
