Cyberpunk 2077 – how does a Destiny 2 leaker know about Sony’s acquisition plans? Answer: they don’t (Picture: CD Projekt)
A new rumour of Sony buying out CD Projekt has been quickly shut down, with the latter saying it isn’t in any such talks with the former.
While Sony is as hungry for more acquisitions as Microsoft is, it’s mostly stuck to buying smaller studios. The highest profile buy out in recent memory was last year’s Bungie acquisition and even then, the Destiny studio retains enough independence to launch its games on other platforms.
There have been rumours/speculation of Sony buying Square Enix, but over the weekend chatter spread of the PlayStation company acquiring CD Projekt, the company behind The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077.
The source of said rumour is a purportedly reliable Destiny 2 leaker, but that doesn’t really matter since CD Projekt has wholeheartedly denied it.
CD Projekt’s senior public relations manager Ola Sondej provided a blunt and succinct ‘We’re not in such talks with Sony’ in response to a Twitter discussion about the rumour.
There was speculation of CD Projekt being sold off to another company a couple of years ago, but that was only after its share price dropped following the disastrous launch of Cyberpunk 2077.
Since then, CD Projekt has managed to salvage its reputation and Cyberpunk 2077 with post-launch updates, and the game has proved financially successful, turning massive profits.
This rumour of a Sony buy out was already hard to believe considering this sort of information simply doesn’t leak and it was incredibly unlikely that a Destiny 2 insider would be privy to this sort of information.
What makes it extra unbelievable, though, is that the same rumour also mentioned that a Days Gone 2 had entered development, despite the fact that Sony already cancelled the sequel and developer Sony Bend has moved onto a new IP.
Sony Bend’s community manager Kevin McAllister has commented on the Days Gone 2 rumour with a simple ‘We are laughing’ GIF, calling said rumour ‘truly exhausting.’
It’s truly exhausting. People gotta get those ‘likes’ tho

In terms of actual updates, Sony Bend has yet to say anything new about its next project besides it featuring an open world and multiplayer functionality. It was also completely absent at the recent PlayStation showcase.
As for CD Projekt, it’s recently confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077’s DLC expansion, Phantom Liberty, will be present as part of Summer Game Fest’s in-person Play Days event, meaning fans will be treated to new info next month.
