Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
Many of Tuesday’s front pages lead with the “damning verdict on the Met” as Baroness Casey’s blistering 368-page report, being published on Tuesday, says the Metropolitan Police service is institutionally racist, sexist and homophobic.
The papers also look at the former prime minister Boris Johnson’s legal dossier, which he submitted to the parliamentary committee investigating allegations that he misled MPs over the No10 parties scandal.
‘Rotten Met lost public faith’
According to the front page of the Times, Baroness Casey’s review of the Metropolitan Police following the tragic murder of Sarah Everard has led to a loss of public faith in the force. The report concludes that the police cannot be trusted to police themselves.
“Rotten Met has lost public faith”, reads the headline.
The Daily Telegraph’s headline calls the Met Police “racist, sexist, and broken” and describes the report as “damning,” with the public being let down.
The Daily Mail’s headline refers to the force as “broken and rotten,” and their publication of Baroness Casey’s conclusions is seen as the last chance to improve the Met Police.
The Sun believes that the problems are too vast to be fixed and suggests breaking up the Met into more manageable units for better policing. The paper argues that “re-building this broken force looks like climbing Everest in flip-flops”.
Boris Johnson investigation
The Daily Mirror looks ahead to Boris Johnson’s appearance before MPs investigating claims of lockdown parties at Downing Street, predicting the most humiliating fall from grace for any ex-PM in history.
The i believes that Mr Johnson will mount a robust defence and predicts an extraordinary political comeback if he is cleared.
