John Terry did not appreciate Piers Morgan’s dig at Chelsea on Twitter and fired back with a well-placed shot of his own at Arsenal.
The Gunners are riding high at the top of the Premier League, five points clear of closest rivals Manchester City and a long way clear of struggling Chelsea.
The Blues are down in 10th, 21 points behind Arsenal and completely out of any title race, already 10 points off the Champions League places, so they face a real fight to even return to the top four.
The owners at Stamford Bridge have tried to spend their way out of the slump, bringing in eight players in January, including Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for a British record £106.8m.
It is a bold strategy from Todd Boehly and his consortium, and Morgan was keen to mock Arsenal’s London rivals for their league position despite the massive investment.
The TV presenter wrote on Twitter: ‘Reminder to Chelsea fans: we’re top of the League, you’re 10th, and we’re 21pts ahead of you with a game in hand. So spend all the gazillions you want but what you REALLY need to buy is a telescope to look up at Arsenal.’
It’s childish stuff and Terry was ready to get involved at the same level, suggesting he has picked up more trophies on the golf course in recent years than Arsenal have managed to win.
The Chelsea hero replied: ‘@piersmorgan you have gone missing for 20 years! And you still have a long way to go.
‘I have won more trophies since I retired playing golf than Arsenal have.’
Chelsea are back in action on Friday night at home against Fulham in the Premier League, with Arsenal going to Everton on Saturday lunchtime.
