Awards, awards galore! (Picture: Metro.co.uk/Getty)
If you listen very, very closely, you just might hear the sound of an assistant somewhere in Hollywood crying.
That’s because it’s one of the busiest times of year for the stars and all those in their orbit – awards season.
The first few months of the new year always see a slew of glitzy, glamorous gatherings as the best of the previous year’s TV, film and music are celebrated.
You will want to know all the details beforehand -a fter all, you wouldn’t want to miss this year’s version of Will Smith’s Oscars slap or other pop culture defining moments, like wild moments on stage, iconic red carpet looks and blunders akin to the La La Land/Moonlight debacle.
They definitely keep us entertained, so here’s the low down of awards season 2023…
When are the Golden Globes?
The Golden Globes unofficially kick off awards season each year, landing in the first few weeks of January.
Awards season 2022 had to do without the Golden Globes, as the more high-profile ceremony was replaced with an audience-less affair after the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) were criticised for their lack of diversity.

Learning from their mistakes, this year’s ceremony promises to be bigger and better than ever – back in the iconic Beverly Hilton hotel and with stars including Ana de Armas and Billy Porter on hand to present awards.
Nominations this year include Rihanna, who claims her first nod for her Black Panther song, Avatar, Elvis and Top Gun: Maverick.

When are the Critics Choice awards?
Not one of the most famous award ceremonies, but the Critics Choice awards are often looked at as an indicator of how the Oscars will go.
The winners of the Critics Choice nearly always go on to win the same categories at the Academy Awards. In 2022, the winners of the Critics Choice Awards who’d go on to win the same category at the Oscars included:
Best Actress – Jessica Chastain
Best Actor – Will Smith
Best Supporting Actress – Ariana DeBose
Best Original Song – No Time to Die
Best Director – Jane Campion, The Power of the Dog
This year, the Critic’s Choice Awards will be held where it has been for many years in the past, the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel. The ceremony starts Sunday, January 15 at 7pm Eastern Time.
The ceremony will be hosted by Chelsea Handler.
Nominations this year include the likes of Glass Onion, Elvis, and Everything, Everywhere All At Once for Best Picture.

When are the GRAMMYs?
The film stars aren’t the only ones shining – the GRAMMY awards are the first major music awards show of the year.
This year, Beyonce leads the nominations – and her overall noms now tie husband Jay-Z for the most nominations ever. Talk about a power couple!

The awards will take place live from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. The show will be broadcast live on the CBS Television Network and stream live and on-demand on Paramount+.
Trevor Noah will mark his third time lucky as host of the GRAMMYs, returning to MC the evening after doing the same in 2021 and 2022.

When are the Brits?
So far, all of the action is happening on the other side of the Atlantic. But luckily for the Brits, in February an injection of glamour comes in the form of the Brits.
The event will take place on Saturday, February 11, broadcast live from London’s O2 arena, and airing exclusively on ITV and ITVX. This marks the 30th year ITV will show the ceremony.
The Brits celebrate the best of British music, with awards handed out for international categories too.
It’s often one of the most chaotic award shows, with past memorable moments including Madonna being pulled off stage by her malfunctioning cape, Geri Halliwell’s iconic union jack dress, Jarvis Cocker ‘stagecrashing’ Michael Jackson, and Robbie Williams challenging Liam Gallagher to a fight.
Nominations for this year will be announced on Thursday, January 12.

When are the BAFTAs?
The British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) celebrate the best in British tv and film.
This year’s BAFTAs will include an exciting first – for the first time, the ceremony will culminate in a live broadcast to reveal the final four category winners, enabling audiences at home to be part of the excitement as it happens.

When are the SAG Awards?
Another awards show which might not be as widely covered as the Oscars, but the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards have been one of the major awards events in Hollywood since 1995 and are well attended by stars of television and film.

Like the Critics Choice Awards, the SAG awards are a good indication of how the voting might go at the Oscars and the Emmys.
The nominations for the 29th Screen Actors Guild Awards are announced on Wednesday, January 11.

When are the Oscars?
The biggie. The Academy Awards (colloquially known as the Oscars) still holds the most prestige among the award shows and caps off the traditional awards season.

It brings out the biggest names in Hollywood and honours the best in filmmaking – and they often provide some of the biggest pop culture moments of the year.
Last year, the 2022 Academy Awards saw Apple TV+’s CODA become the first film released by a streaming service to win Best Picture and its star, Troy Kotsur, became the first deaf man to secure an acting Oscar.
West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose became the first openly queer woman of colour to win Best Supporting Actress; and, before winning Best Actor, Will Smith created arguably the moment of the year when he slapped Chris Rock.

Who knows what 2023 has in store?
Jimmy Kimmel will host this year’s Oscars for the third time, having previously hosted in 2018 and 2019.
It was during his first hosting stint that Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway mistakenly announced La La Land as the Best Picture winner. Not to jinx it…
The Oscars will take place on March 12 at their usual home, the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center (although technically it’s had a rebrand, now named Ovation Hollywood).
Nominations aren’t announced until January 24.

There’s plenty of attention on the silver screen, but what about those who tread the boards?
The theatre world has two key award ceremonies every year, starting with the Olivier Awards.
Named after one of the UK’s finest actors, Sir Laurence Olivier, they celebrate the best of West End performances over the past years.
The Olivier Award statue is a cast of Laurence Olivier in Henry V at the Old Vic in 1937, and the design is commissioned by the Society of London Theatre. They aren’t flimsy or rushed either – Olivier Awards statues weigh 1.6 kilograms!
Nominations have yet to be announced.

Okay, okay – not technically an awards show but most definitely one of the most glamorous, fashionable and oh-so luxurious days of the year.
The annual Met Gala is oversaw by Anna Wintour, who picks the theme and hosts the star-studded event to raise funds for New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute.
The 2023 Met Gala theme will be ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’ to honour the late legendary designer.
The event will take place on May 1, 2023, which is, as always, the first Monday in May.
