Prince Andrew: The Musical was always going to spark a mixed bag of reactions, as the Channel 4 production shines a spotlight on the controversies that continue to surround the disgraced royal.
However, the Duke of York wasn’t the only individual whose past activities were highlighted in the farcical extravaganza, with King Charles III also a focal element of the programme amid a mention of his infamous ‘tampon-gate’.
The musical features comedic actor Kieran Hodgson as Prince Andrew, with comedian Munya Chawawa taking on the role of the monarch, when he was formerly known as Prince Charles.
At one point, Munya’s Charles has his own musical number, during which he laments the pressures of being under ‘constant scrutiny’.
‘Even me, I’ve got no leg to stand on, ‘cos I said I’d like to be Camilla’s tampon,’ he then croons.
‘I meant romantically!’ he added as a side note.

The mention of ‘tampon-gate’ harks back to an incident that occurred in 1989 when the King was married to Princess Diana.
A leaked phone conversation allegedly recorded him joking with the now-Queen Consort Camilla – who was also married – that he wanted to ‘live inside’ her trousers and be reincarnated as a tampon.
Several people watching the programme were astounded by the reference, with one tweeting: ‘Even the Charles Camilla tampon scandal makes the cut.’
‘“I haven’t got a leg to stand on, because I said I wanted to be Camilla’s… tampon” CACKLING!’ another remarked.

Another analysed the lyrics in further detail, commenting: ‘Camilla’s tampon and 🎵I meant it romantically🎶 would be two things you think you would never hear said together ever because no.’
The tampon scandal was included in the fifth season of The Crown, as depicted by Dominic West and Olivia Williams, who played Charles and Camilla respectively.
Dominic told Radio Times that while he previously thought it was a ‘sordid, embarrassing discussion revisiting it’, he later concluded that it was ‘just an intensely personal conversation, and what was sordid was the prurient interest in it’.
‘Most people, if they’re lucky enough, will have had conversations like that with people they love,’ he said.
‘It’s very sweet, tender, and gauche but, like any intensely personal conversation, just not for public consumption.’
Prince Andrew: The Musical is available to watch on All 4.
