James Maddison is closing in on full fitness (Picture: PA)
James Maddison is expected to be fit for Leicester’s meeting with Newcastle United on Boxing Day despite sitting out of the League Cup game with MK Dons on Tuesday night, confirmed Foxes assistant Chris Davies.
The England international is back from the World Cup and is no longer dealing with the hamstring problem which he was suffering at the start of the campaign in Qatar.
Maddison has recovered, but after not being involved at all in England’s World Cup campaign, Leicester are easing him back to match fitness, although that did not include playing him in the 3-0 win at MK Dons.
Davies reckons he will be playing on Boxing Day, though, when the Foxes host Newcastle in the Premier League.
‘We just need to get him up to speed really, he’ll be training this week,’ said Davies on Tuesday night. ‘He was training with England, he didn’t train initially when he first went but then he did.
‘He is fine, he will be training with us this week and he’s fine. It is just a question of getting him up to speed. James came back a little bit later than the other guys that played tonight from the World Cup, so he was not up to speed to play, just as the other guys wouldn’t if they came back later.
‘He is training this week. I would expect him to be available for Boxing Day.’
Goals from Youri Tielemans, Ayoze Perez and Jamie Vardy saw Leicester into the quarter-finals of the League Cup and Davies was delighted with the night’s work.
‘It was a really good evening for us, really positive, having been a few weeks away now from competitive games, it was really good to get back with a good performance and a win,’ he said.
‘The cohesion was really good, we had the majority of the squad with us in our training camp.
‘We were hoping this could be a perfect game for us leading into the Premier League restarting and it turned out to be that.’
