What can you do to your heating to freeze your bills? (Picture: Getty)
The cost of living crisis has, no doubt, had an impact on most people’s lives by now, whether it’s a noticeable bump in their bills or you’re considering a leaner Christmas.
While there’s plenty of hacks that can help save money, there’s also some misinformation and urban legends that get mistaken for fact.
For example, everyone’s heard that turning the heating on low all day is cheaper than cranking it up when you’re actually cold.
How true is this?
Is it cheaper to keep the heating on low all day?
While it might be a nice thought to save money and have the heating on a steady, low level all day, this actually might not be the case.
So says the money saving maestro himself, Martin Lewis.
On Lewis’ MoneySavingExpert website, it explains: ‘Having the heating on only when you need it is, in the long run, the best way to save energy, and therefore money.’

According the Energy Saving Trust, the long-held belief that it’s cheaper to leave the heating on low all day is just a myth.
Heating the home only when you need is the best for saving energy – and, therefore, saving money.
The other principle many experts, including MoneySavingExpert, agree on is you should heat the human, not the home.
This means, keep yourself warm above all, focusing on heating the rooms you’re using.
For example, can you turn down the heating in rooms elsewhere and hunker down in your bedroom earlier?

How much does heating cost?
It’s hard to give a definitive answer to this. There are various factors that affect heating costs, from your supplier to how well insulated your home is.
As a general picture, though, Martyn Bridges, director of technical services at Worcester Bosch, has given Homebuilding & Renovating a rough estimate for a typical home.
He estimates heating will cost around:
12p an hour (£2.82 a day) for a gas boiler13p an hour (£3.10 a day) if running a heat pump.
