US midterms 2022 – What is the House of Representatives? And how is it different from the Senate?
The House is one of Congress’s two chambers (the other is the U.S. Senate), and part of the federal government’s legislative branch.
The U.S. House of Representatives makes and passes federal laws.
The House of Representatives is made up of 435 members and is similar to UK MPs.
The members of the House of Representatives represent their local population in Congress and are the person you should contract if you have a problem with how the country is being run.
They are referred to as a congressman or congresswoman and are elected to a two-year term serving the people of a specific congressional district.
Among other duties, representatives introduce bills and resolutions, offer amendments and serve on committees.
The number of representatives per state is proportionate to the population.
They are elected every two years – in all US elections and midterms.
In order to pass legislation and send it to the President for his or her signature, both the House and the Senate must pass the same bill by majority vote. If the President vetoes a bill, they may override his veto by passing the bill again in each chamber with at least two-thirds of each body voting in favour.
