What sort of leader will Rishi Sunak be? Experts have given their thoughts on the new Prime Minister (Picture: AP/PA/EPA/Getty)

Rishi Sunak has all the leadership traits to get the country to back him as Prime Minister, experts have said.

Mr Sunak will walk into Number 10 for the first time as PM today after he defeated Penny Mordaunt in the leadership contest.

He becomes the third Prime Minister in four months, after Boris Johnson resigned, and Liz Truss was the shortest-ever leader, spending just 44 days in office.

Leadership expert, David Craig White, said he believes Rishi has the leadership attributes to take on the job as PM.

He said his ‘patient and professional’ style will make him the perfect fit for Downing Street.

The leadership mentor said his ‘calm’ and ‘composed’ techniques will help him grow on the public, and that his communication skills ‘make him stand above the rest.’

Mr White told Metro.co.uk: ‘His style of leadership is very patient, professional and data-driven.

‘He stood side-by-side with Boris Johnson through one of the most challenging times the country has ever faced, and while his peers appeared flustered and lacking confidence.

‘Rishi Sunak always appeared calm, confident and composed – and always seemed to be prepared with an actionable plan.

‘People need leaders they feel they can trust to run the country and make the right decisions.

‘Boris had his very special way of communicating and often confusing or amusing people to get him by, and Rishi has his way, which I feel will make him a good leader.

‘I don’t believe anyone in the country trusts any politician – they just look for the one they feel they can trust more than the other options.’

Dr Amanda Goodall has said she doesn’t see Sunak as enough of an expert to lead the UK (Picture: Twitter)

However Dr Amanda Goodall doesn’t necessarily see Sunak as enough of an expert to lead the country.

The associate professor in leadership at Bayes Business School, said the people choosing the new leader aren’t ‘credible themselves’.

Dr Goodall’s research looks at the differences between leaders and managers, and organisational performance.

She says it shows, across all kinds of work settings, that leaders who have a ‘deep understanding of the core business’ – ‘expert leaders’ – create ‘higher organisational performance.’

She said: ‘Being a good manager alone is not a sufficient condition. Generalist leaders are associated with lower overall performance.’

Findings suggest this happens because bosses and line managers who have ‘walked-the-walk’ create the right work environment that leads to higher employee job satisfaction, and lower intentions to quit.

In short, ‘expert bosses are more competent, and they know how to develop and support their teams’ she said.

She added: ‘My research of the last 15 years has shown very conclusively that you need experts in our lives as leaders and managers.

‘In terms of credibility, the people who are making the choices aren’t credible themselves, and as a result the wrong people are being selected.

‘Clearly he has got more financial experience than other contenders but he’s not an expert in the field, and it is a financial depression we are heading for, and we need an expert economist.’

Leadership expert David Craig White has shared his thoughts on what Rishi will be like as PM (Picture: David Craig White / Twitter)

She said she thinks Sunak was elected because Brits tend to do things based on their personality, or emotional senses, rather than what is logical.

She said: ‘We have to get back to expertise and we have failed our people because of our lack of expertise.

‘Why is it that someone running the country can do that without any expertise in the matter?

‘We are lacking experience in lots of areas of government right now, and experience is one of the key factors in leadership.

‘What experiences can he draw upon from his past, that are going to help him in the future?’

She said: ‘He’s a young man still and has had a very privileged upbringing, whether he can manage all the personalities in Parliament, who knows.’

Anna Sanders, a politics lecturer at the University of York, said without knowing his mandate, it would be hard to tell what kind of a PM Sunak will be.

She said: ‘We do know in terms of his record; we might be able to infer what he might do.

‘Previously he promised to cut basic rate of income tax from 20 per cent to 16%, and this low tax conservative is trying to portray fiscal prudence.

‘It is unlikely we will see any big spending commitments, and I am doubtful we will see huge rises in public spending.

‘But I think the other thing is he has said before there needs to be a return to traditional economic values.

‘Sunak said before we need a return to traditional honesty and responsibility, not fairy-tales.’

Speaking about how his previous role as Chancellor will help him, she said: ‘The situation has changed, the economic landscape has changed from when he was in office.

‘There’s been a change in economic situation, so it might be we can’t just go off his record.

‘We have seen how people like Truss in the past have shown how they will deal with the economy, and he will want to stay well clear of that.’

She added: ‘I think he’s tried to portray himself as the more realistic PM, We saw her making big promises that she couldn’t keep and that was part of her downfall.

‘There has always been a sense that he will offer a realism of what Government can achieve.

‘As where with Truss we saw big promises, which also explains why we’ve not seen many promises or commitments as we have seen how hard it is to follow through on them.

‘I think Sunak will avoid half-baked policies that haven’t been thought through.’

It is an interesting time because right now economic competence is incredibly important, and for the first time the Tories aren’t seen as being on top of this.

‘Labour seem on top, and it is a big turning point, they [Conservatives] will need to think of how to rebuild economic competence.’
