Tory leadership: Sajid Javid endorses Liz Truss’s bid to be PM
Sajid Javid endorses Liz Truss – the former health secretary has officially backed Liz Truss to take over from Boris Johnson and become the next prime minister, calling for urgent tax cuts in an attack on her rival Rishi Sunak’s economic plans.
Javid said Rishi Sunak’s plans could make the UK a “middle-income economy” and argued Liz Truss was the best placed to rise to “the challenge of our age.”
Sunak and Truss are battling it out to win over Tory Party members, who will vote in the next party leader and therefore prime minister. There are roughly 160,000 members – they started receiving ballots this week and a result is due on 5 September.
The pair will battle it out in a Sky News debate this evening.
