Breaking News: Thousands of people are being evacuated from a town in Derbyshire because part of a reservoir wall has collapsed in floods.
The citizens of Whalley Bridge are in a state panic and frantically rushing to secure their possessions and get to safety at the same time.
Emergency services and engineers are working pumping water from Toddbrook Reservoir but if it bursts it could flood Whaley Bridge in Derbyshire.
Police have told the town’s 6,500 residents to gather at a local school, taking pets and medication with them.
Emergency food provisions are being prepared as the security of the Dam wall is an ongoing situation. It is unlikely to be completed safely within the next few hours and if more rainfall falls, will require more work.
A severe flood warning, which means a threat to life, has been issued for the River Goyt, below the reservoir.
It is a race against time as ten industrial water pumps from fire services across the country are currently pumping out 7,000 litres of water a minute in a bid to bring down the water level to a safe level.
Transport links in the area are severely delayed and affecting rains between Hazel Grove and Buxton have been blocked because of the flooding. This has affected the Northern train services between Manchester Piccadilly and Buxton.
There is a yellow weather warning for rain in place from the Met Office for the area until 20:00.
