Ukraine’s President Zelensky addresses Davos forum after helicopter crash that killed 14
President Zelensky told the World Economic Forum in Davos that the recent helicopter crash in Kyiv resulted from the war.
Zelensky said there are “no accidents at war time” but hasn’t claimed Russia was involved in the crash that killed 14.
Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky was killed in the crash alongside several of his colleagues.
The Ukrainian president used his video address to urge allies to send more weapons before the new Russian offensives.
“The time the free world uses to think is used by the terrorist state to kill,” he explained.
It’s understood that his remark was a request for Germany to speed up its delivery of its Leopard tanks.
Germany is reportedly unwilling to send the vehicles unless the US commits to offering its own tanks. The UK recently pledged to send a number of its own tanks to Ukraine.
The head of the Nato military alliance said at Davos on Wednesday that Ukraine will receive “more support, more advanced support, heavier weapons and more modern weapons”.
Nato member states will meet on Friday to discuss what military equipment could be sent to Ukraine.
There is no indication that the helicopter crash was anything other than an accident.
Key officials are often flown by helicopter across Ukraine at tree level to avoid detection – but that often comes with risks.
