Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom – will there be DLC this year? (pic: Nintendo)
Nintendo seems to have accidentally revealed that there is DLC planned for the sequel to Zelda: Breath Of The Wild.
Although it’s not something they used to do, almost every major new Nintendo game nowadays has its own DLC and season pass. Zelda: Breath Of The Wild was one of the first to set the trend and so it’s not much of a surprise to think that Tears Of The Kingdom might be the same – what is surprising is that Nintendo is talking about it already, sort of.
Eagled-eyed fans noticed that the small print on the official website for the game features the phrase ‘**Full version of game required to use DLC. Sold separately.’
That doesn’t make any sense though as there’s no reference to DLC anywhere else on the page and nothing with two asterisks next to it, that this might be a reference to. So either someone has copied and pasted the wrong text or something has been revealed before it should be.
The first DLC for Breath Of The Wild was released only four months after the main game, with a more substantial chunk five months after that, which is surprisingly quick given how much content is in the main game.
Neither was as universally praised as the parent game but they added up to a substantial expansion that few fans felt short changed about.

If Nintendo is aiming for a similar schedule then that does mean that DLC for Tears Of The Kingdom is likely to be released this year.
The question is whether this is an actual reference to that or if someone was just reusing the legal small print from Breath Of The Wild and didn’t notice they included the DLC reference as well.
You won’t get an answer from Nintendo until they’re good and ready but today’s announcement of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet DLC proves that they’re increasingly keen to get expansions out as soon as possible.
Whether they’d reveal the Tears Of The Kingdom DLC before the game’s release in May is less clear though, and it’s probably more likely to happen a month or so after.
The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom will launch on May 12 for Nintendo Switch.
