Is Twilight Princess aboutto get its second remaster? (Picture: Nintendo)
A now deleted tweet from a respected industry analyst suggests that a new Zelda release may be coming this year.
Following Nintendo’s announcement of its Zelda: Skyward Sword remaster for the Switch, it’s been frequently rumoured that two other Zelda games – The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess – would receive similar treatment. This rumour has persisted since early 2021, yet both games have been absent at every Nintendo Direct thus far.
It has been claimed that Nintendo still has something Zelda related to announce before the end of 2023 and fans are convinced that it’s another remake or remaster, thanks to a now deleted comment from industry analyst Dr Serkan Toto on Twitter.
The tweet reads: ‘Z R 2023,’ which many assume to mean a Zelda remake/remaster that will launch this year. That’s because in 2021, Toto made a similar tweet of ‘Z2 2022,’ alluding to the launch date of the then untitled Tears Of The Kingdom before Nintendo had announced one. While the game came out in 2023, Nintendo was initially aiming for a 2022 launch.
Toto isn’t normally one for spreading rumours, but it’s not uncommon for him to make such claims. Aside from the aforementioned Tears Of The Kingdom example, in 2022 he claimed that Mario Kart 9 was in development and could be teased that year. That second point obviously didn’t happen and instead Nintendo announced DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
So far, it seems no one saved Toto’s tweets for posterity, although curiously he not only deleted the initial ‘Z R 2023’ tweet but also his old ‘Z2 2022’ one.
Unsurprisingly, deleting both only reinforces the idea that the Zelda remake/remaster theory is correct and he’s either been given a strongly worded email by Nintendo or is covering his tracks to avoid one.
If Nintendo does have a Zelda announcement before the end of the year, the most likely time it’ll make it is during The Game Awards 2023 on December 7. It’s also not above shadow dropping games either; the Metroid Prime remaster launched digitally the very day it was announced.

Back in July, insider Jeff Grubb (who regularly predicted the Metroid Prime remaster) said he had heard as much and that it would be unrelated to Tears Of The Kingdom.
Although remasters of The Wind Waker and/or Twilight Princess are perfectly possible the games have already been re-released on the Wii U and so there seems little reason for such secrecy.
The hurried deletion of the tweets suggests Toto may have been referring to something more exciting, and yet it seems highly unlikely that anything unexpected would be announced and released this late in the year.
