Are we next? (pic: Microsoft)
A second country has seen the price of the Xbox Series X and S increase, as similar hikes for the rest of the world seems inevitable.
As soon as Microsoft announced a price increase for the Xbox Series X/S consoles in Japan, last month, it seemed only a matter of time until it was applied to other countries, although no one guessed the next would be Sweden… and nowhere else.
Although at first it seems odd that it would be just Sweden, and not anywhere else in Europe, presumably it has something to do with Sweden using its own currency and not the euro.
Whatever the exact explanation, the Xbox Series X has increased in price by the equivalent of £40 to 6,195 krona (£499). The Xbox Series S has seen its price jump by £24 to 3,894 krona (£314).
The increases are not the same as in Japan, where the Xbox Series X jumped by the equivalent of £31 and the Xbox Series S by £36, but given the completely different currencies and economic situations in each country it’s impossible to tell what that might mean for the UK and other regions.
It does seem inevitable that the UK will eventually see a price rise though, as Microsoft last year warned they were likely, for not just consoles but also game prices and subscriptions like Game Pass.
Sony has already increased the price of the PlayStation 5 everywhere except the US, so given the Xbox’s biggest global markets are the US and UK there is at least a small chance that we could escape a price hike from Microsoft.
However, if you were already planning to get an Xbox Series X or S, the best advice is to pull the trigger as soon as possible, as there’s no guarantee they’re going to stay at the current prices for long.
