Iran protests: Raisi calls for investigation into police custody death

Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi has called for an investigation into the death of the 22-year-old woman who was in police custody, arrested on hijab charges.

The death of the young woman has led to massive protests, including women burning their headscarves and cutting their hair.

Speaking on a visit to the UN General Assembly in New York, Mr Raisi accused the West of hypocrisy for raising concerns over Mahsa Amini’s death.

The woman was reportedly beaten by police, who had arrested her for allegedly breaking headscarf rules, she was in a coma for several days before passing away.

At least 17 people have died in the worst unrest in Iran for years. So far, the protests have reached about 80 cities and towns.
