Captured Briton possibly suffered ‘unspeakable’ torture

Paul Urey, 45, was a British man who died in detention in July after being captured by pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine. His body has now been returned by Russia and Ukraine says the body has signs of “possible unspeakable torture.”

The UK had described Paul Urey as an aid worker and said Russia must face responsibility for his death.

Ukraine’s FM Dmytro Kuleba confirmed the “Russian” had returned his body with signs of “possible unspeakable torture” but gave no further details.

The foreign minister condemned the detention and torture of civilians as a war crime and vowed to “hold them to account.”

If the torture claims are proven, it could potentially contract earlier claims by Russian-backed officials that Mr Urey died in captivity on 10 July due to underlying health conditions and “stress.”
