LANDSLIDE, BUILDING DAMAGE FROM PHILIPPINES QUAKE KILLS 4
Arab News reports a strong and shallow quake hit the southern Philippines on Wednesday, sending hundreds rushing out of a shopping mall where local television said killing at least one child and injuring many more. An elderly man received treatment after being struck by a falling object during the quake. “We felt a very strong jolt and there was a blackout. I saw people rushing down. We were panicking, heading to the exit,” said Naru Guarda Cabaddu.

US VP PENCE, SECRETARY OF STATE POMPEO HEAD TO TURKEY SEEKING CEASEFIRE
France 24 says Vice President Mike Pence has set off to Turkey, hoping to halt a weeklong assault on Syrian Kurds after Donald Trump withdrew US troops. He was scheduled to leave just hours after Trump minimised the very crisis he sent his aides on an emergency mission to douse. “If Turkey goes onto Syria, that’s between Turkey and Syria, it’s not between Turkey and the United States,” Trump said.

LAM ABANDONS SPEECH AS HONG KONG LAWMAKERS SAY SHE HAS ‘BLOOD ON HER HANDS’
CNN reports Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam’s annual speech ended in chaos as pro-democracy lawmakers repeatedly disrupted her speech. She heckled with calls to honour the demands of anti-government protests. The speech was a key opportunity for Lam to end speculation of the percieved factors behind the unrest. But she quickly abandoned her speech after the jeers. Civic Party lawmaker Tanya Chan accused Lam of having “blood on her hands” and said Lam had no right to address lawmakers due to the chaos unleashed by Lam’s now abandoned extradition bill with China.
