SKIP SCHOOL FOR CLIMATE PROTESTS, NEW YORK TELLS KIDS
France 24 says New York authorities have given their blessings to children wanting to skip school to join activist Greta Thunberg in a climate protest next week. “New York City stands with our young people. They’re our conscience. We support the 9/20 #ClimateStrike,” Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Twitter. Protests in New York on September 20 are part of coordinated climate demonstrations being held around the world. There will be a UN summit on zero-emissions on Septemeber 23. One of the event’s organisers said the strike “is going to be the biggest day of climate action the world has seen.”

TALIBAN CAR BOMB KILLS FOUR AFGHAN SPECIAL FORCES IN KABUL
Arab News says a suicide bomber targeted an Afghan Special Forces base in Kabul on Thursday. At least four commandos have been killed and three injured as violence continues to escalate after US-Taliban peace talks came to an end. The bomber blew up a minibus holding explosives at the entrance to the camp. A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack and said they killed more than 200 commandos. Insurgents often exaggerate the number of causalities.

EL PASO SHOOTER INDICTED ON MURDER CHARGES
Aljazeera reports a Texas grand jury has indicted a man accused of killing 22 people in the El Paso Walmart shooting. Patrick Crusius, 21 told authorities he was targeting Mexicans. He is accused of driving from the Dallas area to El Paso on August 3 and shooting at shoppers with a rifle in a Walmart store. Crusius surrendered to officers when confronted outside the store. Just 13 hours later, the US suffered another mass shooting – this one in Dayton, Ohio. After the El Paso shooting many called for stricter gun laws and accused President Donald Trump of stirring racial tensions. Crusius was indicted on capital murder charges on Thursday. And prosecutors said they will seek the death penalty.
