CHINA DRAFTS PLAN TO REPLACE CARRIE LAM AS HK’S CHIEF EXEC: FT
Aljazeera reports China is planning to replace Carrie Lam with an “interim” chief executive according to the Financial Times (FT). If the Chinese President decides to go ahead with the proposal, the newspaper said Lam’s successor would be appointed by March and cover the remainder of her term. One of Carrie Lam’s successors includes the former head of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, Norman Chan. Sources told the FT that officials in China want to stabilise the situation before a final decision can be made on leadership changes, as they do not want to be seen as giving in to violence.

RUSSIAN & SYRIAN FORCES TO DEPLOY TO NORTHEASTERN SYRIA OUTSIDE TURKEY OPERATION – PUTIN-ERDOGAN AGREEMENT
RT News says Russian military police and Syrian servicemen will be deployed to northeastern Syria, while Turkey’s operation ‘Peace Spring’ will continue in a limited area, presidents Putin and Erdogan have agreed. Putin said Moscow understands the reasons behind the ongoing Turkish military incursion into Syria. But said it must not play into the hands of terrorists. He said the country must be freed from all “illegal foreign military presence.” Over almost seven hours of talks between Putin and his Turkish counterpart, Erdogan was focused on the situation in Syria and the ongoing offensive in its northeastern region.

US DIPLOMAT TESTIFIES TRUMP TIED UKRAINE AID TO POLITICALLY MOTIVATED PROBES
France 24 says the top American diplomat in Ukraine testified on Tuesday that President Trump made the release of U.S security aid to Ukraine contingent on Kiev publicly declaring it would carry out politically motivated investigations that he demanded. The comments by William Taylor, a career diplomat and former Army officer, were in a copy of his statement posted online by US media. Taylor’s statement to the three Democratic-led House of Representatives committees leading an impeachment inquiry against Trump marked a pivotal development. And threatens Trump’s presidency even as he pursues re-election.
