World Cup 2022: Fifa saddened after death of migrant worker
Fifa has said it is saddened by the reported death of a migrant worker at a World Cup facility in Qatar.
The migrant worker fell to his death whilst carrying out repairs at a resort that is being used as a training base by the Saudi Arabian team, The Athletic reported.
Fifa said it has been made aware of an accident, without giving details of the incident. The footballing body added that it was in touch with local authorities to establish more details.
‘Deeply saddened’
“Fifa is deeply saddened by this tragedy and our thoughts and sympathies are with the worker’s family,” it said.
“Fifa will be in a position to comment further once the relevant processes in relation to the worker’s passing have been completed.”
The topic of migrant workers and how they have been treated has been one of the main controversies of the Qatar World Cup.
The Guardian reported that 6,500 migrant workers had died in Qatar since the country was awarded the tournament in 2010.
But Qatari officials reject the figure and say there have only been 3 work-related deaths in constrictions related to the tournament and a further 37 non-work-related deaths.
