Wolfenstein: Youngblood – it’s been nearly three years since the last Wolfenstein game (Picture: Bethesda)
MachineGames seems to have finally started work on Wolfenstein 3, according to a new job listing.
Although a third Wolfenstein game has been promised as far back as 2018, there has been zero chatter about it since then, official or otherwise.
Right now, developer MachineGames is still busy with its Indiana Jones game, which has also not had any updates since the teaser reveal in 2021.
It wasn’t made clear if MachineGames wants to finish work on Indiana Jones before going back to Wolfenstein. However, a newly spotted job listing may suggest that both projects are in development simultaneously.
The listing is for a senior animator at MachineGames and while it doesn’t mention the Wolfenstein series by name, there’s enough to suggest that it is related.
Aside from the fact that it talks about working on new AAA titles, among the requested qualifications and preferred skills for applicants are a passion for ‘first person immersive games’ and a ‘strong familiarity with MachineGames’ titles.’
Considering MachineGames has made nothing but Wolfenstein games, barring a couple of expansions for the Quake remaster, it’s not too much of a stretch to assume the studio has begun work on Wolfenstein 3.
You could argue the studio’s just hiring for the Indiana Jones game but, if that was the case, why wouldn’t the listing mention that? That project was unveiled two years ago and it seems unlikely it would be first person.
In fact, the last thing Bethesda’s head of publishing, Pete Hines, had to say about Wolfenstein 3 was: ‘We’ll have to wait till we get to the point of wanting to talk about it. But you can put me at the head of the list of people who want to see another Wolfenstein game, so no worries there.’
It’s also unclear when exactly the job listing (which you can view on Bethesda’s website) was posted, although we have to assume it’s relatively new considering word of it only spread recently after being picked up by Tech4Gamers.
With any luck, there’ll at least be an update on the Indiana Jones project at next month’s Xbox showcase, which is scheduled for 6pm BST on June 11.
