Winter holiday plans: Sunny travel destinations for February
February is a great time for a sunny getaway. Amid the freezing temperatures of the cold snap, you may be thinking about hotter days.
After months of grey skies, cold temperatures, and wet weather there are few who won’t be dreaming of a beach break for a week or two by the time February rolls around.
So whether it’s a two-week stay on a beach paradise or a busy city – here are some great places to holiday in February with warmer temperatures.
Where is hot in February?
Cancun, Mexico
Temperature: 23°C (up to 29°C)
Sunshine hours: Nine hours
Flight time: 10 hours, 40 minutes
As the UK hits peak coldness over in Mexico February can reach scorching hot.
Highs of around 30C are possible, but even if it’s not hitting those numbers, you can expect it to be hot and sunny and in the 20s. Better still: it’ll be balmy at night, so hopefully, you won’t need to wrap up.
The city of Cancun – bordering on the Caribbean sea, is a great beach holiday destination. Alternatively, for culture, you should travel along the Yucatán Peninsula to Tulum – where you’ll find plenty of beaches as well as a Mayan archaeological site along the coast.
If you’re more of a city person, head to Oaxaca in the southwest or San Miguel de Allende in the Central Highlands.
Lanzarote
Temperature: 18°C (up to 21°C)
Sunshine hours: Seven hours
Flight time: Four hours
A Spanish archipelago off the coast of Africa, there are seven Canary Islands to choose from. Lanzarote, Tenerife and Fuerteventura are amongst some of the most well-known.
You won’t get scorching temperatures here in Feb but you’ll still be feeling the heat – with temperatures climbing into the early 20s.
The short flight time and relatively cheap package deals mean Lanzarote or one of the seven islands could be a really good break amid the cost of living crisis.
There’s plenty to do in Lanzarote, beyond the resorts – such as explore Cuevas de Los Verdes (caves), trek through Timanfaya National Park, or try surfing at Famara Beach.
Barbados
Temperature: 26°C (up to 28°C)
Sunshine hours: Nine hours
Flight time: Eight hours, 30 minutes
February is a great time to visit Barbados – a Caribbean island – as it’s still in its dry season. The average temperature for Feb is 26C – and possibly higher.
There are a few options for what to do and how to spend a trip to Barbados. There are the golden beaches, adventures along the coast, and shopping in the capital city of Bridgetown – which has a museum about the nation’s history.
Another important feature of a Barbados trip is the amazing food, vibrant nightlife, and the many water sports available to try.
Singapore
Temperature: 27°C (up to 31°C)
Sunshine hours: Eight hours
Flight time: 13 hours
February is right in the middle of Singapore’s driest season (Dec-April) meaning the temperatures will be scorching and there’ll be little rainfall. Feb is the country’s hottest month of the year, with temperatures reaching 31C.
What to do in Singapore? Wander through the Gardens By The Bay and then go shopping in the hotspot Clarke Quay.
Singapore may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking of a hot holiday, but there’s plenty to do and see here and some really hot temperatures to thaw out the cold.
Fiji
Temperature: 26°C (up to 29°C)
Sunshine hours: Seven hours
Flight time: Over 24 hours
Temperatures in Fiji in Feb are usually in the upper 20s, while the ocean water is prime for swimming at 28C.
The South Pacific destination has 333 islands – among the biggest and most popular are Viti Levu (where you’d find the capital city Suva), Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and Kadavu.
You’ll see fabulous beaches, and rare birds, take a swim in the pools of Tavoro Falls, and hop across the islands. Take a walk through Sigatoka Sand Dunes National to see the Garden of the Sleeping Giant.
