Raheem Sterling was left out of Chelsea’s match day squad for their trip to Newcastle on Saturday.
On Thursday, the forward was named in England’s 26-man squad for the World Cup in Qatar having been a key part of the national team for the past eight years.
He was expected to start the clash at Newcastle, Chelsea’s last game before the season breaks for Qatar 2022.
However, the 27-year-old was surprisingly not even on the bench at St. James Park, with BT Sport reporting that Sterling had missed the game through illness but thankfully for England it is not said to be COVID-19 related.
This should mean that Sterling should be perfectly fine to travel to Qatar and play in England’s first game against Iran on November 21.
