James Norton’s Tommy Lee Royce is always up to something (Picture: PA)
While James Norton’s villain Tommy Lee Royce may be safely behind bars, Happy Valley fans will know they shouldn’t be lulled into a false sense of security.
The first episode of season 3 was explosive, following relentless sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) investigating a grisly murder after a body washed up in a reservoir as she tries to plan for retirement.
But there was also trouble brewing at home as she was informed by a fellow officer her grandson Ryan (Rhys Connah) had been secretly visiting his psychopath father behind bars.
In utter shock, Catherine asks for more intel after it’s revealed the teenager had been accompanied by a ‘man or woman’, with her pal telling her at the end of the episode she’s ‘not going to like what she hears.’
Fans have already been pointing fingers at the likes of officer Ann Gallagher (Charlie Murphy) and Daniel Cawood (Karl Davies) or Clare Cartwright (Siobhan Finneran) and her boyfriend Neil Ackroyd (Con O’Neill) as the culprits.
But eagled-eyed viewers also have another theory about a very short scene, that sees an eerily calm Tommy practice Spanish from a book in his cell, before looking up at a picture of Ryan.

One Reddit user said they thought the language learning was ‘significant’, adding they believed Tommy was plotting to escape to Spain – and take Ryan with him.
A worried Twitter user believed the same theory, penning: ‘Omg theory. Tommy and Ryan planning to escape to Spain and that’s why Tommy is learning Spanish?????? Am I onto something here?!??’
On a Happy Valley Facebook group, dozens of dedicated viewers debated the scene, with the majority also agreeing that Tommy must be planning to relocate to Spain with Ryan.

A fan added that they believed Tommy would do a deal with the police and trade names for freedom in the gangland murder to assure his release from prison.
However, one watcher thought that while Tommy was hoping to go to Spain, he would do so without his son, adding: ‘Maybe he thinks he’ll get out early for good behaviour and relocate to Spain for a fresh start.’
Who knows what Tommy is up to, but let’s face it, it’s always hatching some evil plan.

In more Happy Valley-related news, fans claimed they were able to watch episode 2 ahead of its air date thanks to a glitch on the Apple store.
One watcher wrote: ‘Happy Valley Season 3 Episode 2 is on iTunes! I’m watching it now!! If you don’t wanna wait till next week buy it now b4 they realise & remove it from the store!’

A Reddit user also noticed the mistake and wrote: ‘I was able to purchase and watch episode two on Apple TV. Apple have since removed it this evening.’ (sic)
‘Well worth the £2.50,’ they added.
Happy Valley continues on BBC One and iPlayer on Sunday at 9pm.
