Who else can’t wait for Luther’s return? (Picture: Netflix)
Ever since the final episodes of Luther aired in 2019 on BBC One, fans of Idris Elba’s gripping crime thriller have been desperate for more.
Luckily, their prayers were answered with the news that a movie spin-off is on the way, with the actor returning as DCI John Luther.
Idris, 50, confirmed how close they were to getting the film made in 2020, before revealing in September this year that filming had wrapped.
‘The Luther film, guess what, we have finished it and we have some finishing work to do on the movie but it’s nearly there,’ he said at the time.
‘The world of Luther as a television show and film is similar, but the film has [huge] scale. We’re opening the doors and widening it so anything’s possible when you can do that.’
Here’s what we know so far…
When is Luther: Fallen Sun released?
Luther: The Fallen Son is set to be released in selected cinemas in February, before it drops on to Netflix shortly after on March 10.
So we don’t have very long to wait at all.
What do we know about Luther: Fallen Sun?
While Netflix is expectedly keeping the detailed plot points of the Luther movie under wraps, the film’s official title has been revealed as well as a compelling synopsis.

Titled Luther: The Fallen Sun, the spin-off will be an ‘epic continuation’ of the TV series, following a ‘gruesome serial killer’ who’s ‘terrorising London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther (Idris Elba) sits behind bars’.
The blurb continues: ‘Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.’

The first teaser trailer has since been released, in which Elba, as the title character, stares directly at the camera, wearing a shirt, jacket and a red tie.
He doesn’t take his eyes off the viewer, as a voice ominously says that ‘something’s coming’ – and as he steps into the shadows, another voice asks ‘You see me now?’
Luther: Fallen Sun cast
A slate of talented actors are set to join Idris in the Luther movie, including Dermot Crowley, who is returning as DSU Martin Schenk.
New cast members to the Luther franchise include Wicked star Cynthia Erivo, Lord of the Rings actor Andy Serkis, retired professional mixed martial artist Jess Liaudin and Samuel Winner.

Earlier this year, Cynthia and Idris were spotted filming in London’s Piccadilly Circus, with the entire area closed off to its usual hustle and bustle of traffic.
Idris was seen wearing Luther’s trademark overcoat, while Cynthia donned a trench coat amid speculation that she could be playing a rival detective.
The rapper could be seen with a fake cut on his nose, insinuating that his character had recently had a scrap of sorts.
