Manchester United head into today’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United looking to end their long trophy drought.
Despite being one of the biggest names in world football, the club have fallen on hard times in recent years compared to the lofty standards set throughout their illustrious history.
And with new manager Erik ten Hag having made a stunning start to his Old Trafford career, many expect United to return to what they do best sooner rather than later – win trophies.
But when specifically was the last time Manchester United won a trophy?
Read on to find out the answer.
When was the last time Manchester United won a trophy?
Manchester United’s last trophy was the Europa League in May 2017.
Jose Mourinho guided the club to a 2-0 win over Ajax in the final, with goals from Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan sealing the victory in Stockholm.

United joined Ajax, Juventus, Bayern Munich and Juventus as the only clubs to have won all three major European trophies (European Cup/Champions League, UEFA Cup/Europa League and the Cup Winners’ Cup).
The triumph in Sweden meant they qualified for the UEFA Super Cup later that year, where they were beaten 2-1 by Real Madrid in North Macedonia.
It also meant they qualified for the next season’s Champions League having only finished in sixth place in the Premier League.
Just three months before winning the Europa League, United won the Carabao Cup courtesy of a 3-2 victory over Southampton at Wembley.
And at the start of the season, the club won the Community Shield, allowing fans to boast they had won ‘a treble’.
The Red Devils have not won the Premier League since 2013 under Sir Alex Ferguson, and have not won the Champions League since 2008.

When were Manchester United last in a final?
United’s last final was against Villarreal in the Europa League back in 2021.
Following a 1-1 draw after extra-time, the game headed to a penalty shootout in Poland.
After United’s ten outfield players all scored their penalties, goalkeeper David de Gea stepped up to take one – and missed.
This meant the Spanish side won 11-10 on penalties to hand them their first ever trophy in the competition.
