US senators call for ‘devastating retaliation across the Middle East’
Republican US senators have been piling pressure on President Joe Biden in the wake of a drone strike that killed three American personnel in northeast Jordan yesterday, with one calling for “devastating retaliation across the Middle East”.
Biden vowed to respond in a speech last night, but failed to offer any detail as to what that may look like.
“He left our troops as sitting ducks,” said Republican senator Tom Cotton.
“The only answer to these attacks must be devastating military retaliation against Iran’s terrorist forces, both in Iran and across the Middle East,” he added.
“Anything less will confirm Joe Biden as a coward unworthy of being commander-in-chief.”
Mike Rogers, a Republican who leads the US military oversight committee, said it was “long past time” Biden acted.
“It’s long past time for President Biden to finally hold the terrorist Iranian regime and their extremist proxies accountable for the attacks they’ve carried out,” he said.
Former President Donald Trump, who looks set to face off against Biden in this year’s presidential election, portrayed the attack as a “consequence of Joe Biden’s weakness and surrender”.
