US Open: Nadal beaten by American Tiafoe
Rafael Nadal has been beaten in a Grand Slam for the first time in 2022, after losing to American Frances Tiafoe in the US Open fourth round.
Tiafoe won 6-4 4-6 6-4 6-3 over the four-time champion in Nadal in New York.
The defeat ended Nadal’s run for a 23rd major singles title.
He had led the fourth set 3-1 before Tiafoe hit back in front of a home crowd, winning five games in a row to secure a place in the quarter-final.
Tiafoe will now face ninth seed Andrey Rublev for a spot in the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows.
Tiafoe thanked the crowd following the win, and said “something special happened today.”
“I don’t know what to say, I’m so happy. He’s one of the greatest of all time and I played unbelievable.”
