Scottish schools shut as teachers strike over pay

Scotland will have its first national schools strike since the 1980s with a one-day walkout by teaching staff.

The walkout will affect primary and secondary schools and many council nurseries. The industrial action is over pay.

On Tuesday, a revised pay offer was rejected and called “insulting” by unions.

But the education secretary says the 10% pay rise that the unions want is “unaffordable.”

A new pay offer from employer Cosla – which would have seen rises of up to 6.85% for the lowest paid – was fair, Shirley-Anne Somerville said.

The EIS represents about 80% of the country’s teachers and its actions are closing the schools.

Only a handful of primary schools in Orkney and Shetland will remain open.
