Boris Johnson says the Taliban must guarantee safe passage for evacuees
The i says the Taliban must guarantee “safe passage” for those that want to leave Afghanistan after the 31 August deadline, the G7 agreed on Tuesday, after failing to persuade US President Joe Biden to extend next week’s cut-off date.
Boris Johnson, alongside France and Germany, was hoping to persuade the US President to extend the deadline to buy more time for the evacuation of Western nationals and eligible Afghans.
The Government is also in talks with countries neighbouring Afghanistan to help Afghans who cannot get out before the deadline. Those eligible to resettle in the UK would be helped to do so via the third country, Whitehall sources said.
