There’s mixed messages about Ubisoft’s mysterious open world Star Wars gam, with the company itself hinting at an early 2024 launch.
It may have been announced over two years ago now but officially we still know almost nothing about Ubisoft’s secret Star Wars game, other than it’s a story-driven open world game.
Subsequent job listings have implied it’s both a shooter and an action role-player, with unconfirmed rumours suggesting it has a bounty hunter theme and is possibly a Mandalorian tie-in, or at least takes a number of cues from the show.
We still don’t know if that’s true, but the game is known to have started public playtesting, with one of the developers implying in January that development was going well. But other sources suggest that’s not the case.
The unnamed Star Wars game is being developed by The Division creators Massive Entertainment, who are also making open world movie tie-in Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora – which keeps getting delayed and still has no release date beyond sometime before March 2024.
Given its problems it’s not surprising to hear that the Star Wars game is suffering from similar issues, with a new report suggesting that the game has been struggling.
Supposedly it’s the unspecified new title that Ubisoft mentioned as coming out in early 2024, but sources suggest it’s more likely it’ll be delayed into the next financial year, which runs from April 2024 to March 2025.
According to Kotaku, the game, which is known internally as Project Helix, ‘hasn’t been progressing well’, although the only detail they offer about what exactly it is, is that it ‘likely’ includes some kind of interplanetary space travel.
It’s not been a good couple of years for Ubisoft, as they’ve suffered a number of recent flops – basically everything that isn’t Assassin’s Creed – and ended up cancelling multiple new titles as a result.
They’ll be hoping to turn things around with their own summer showcase event on June 12, but it’s unclear whether the Star Wars game will be there. If it is out in early 2024 then you’d assume so, but if the year delay is accurate then perhaps not…
