Trump vows to halt ‘border invasion’ at pre-inauguration rally
On the eve of his inauguration, President-elect Donald Trump addressed supporters in Washington, pledging to stop what he called an “invasion” of immigrants at the southern border. He singled out Venezuelan migrants and vowed to expel members of the Tren de Aragua gang.
“These are rough people, and they’re getting the hell out of our country,” the president-elect said.
Trump is scheduled to take the oath of office on Monday at noon (1700 UTC).
Trump also promised swift action to tackle national crises promising to fix “every single crisis” facing the United States. He went on to signal a plan to roll back the policies of outgoing President Joe Biden and implement significant executive orders in his first 100 days. He reiterated plans to restrict transgender participation in women’s sports and limit access to gender-affirming care.
“We’re going to give them the best first day, the biggest first week and the most extraordinary first 100 days of any presidency in American history,” Trump said in his speech.
The president-elect committed to declassifying remaining records on the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr., a promise he partially fulfilled during his previous term.
With his victory in both the popular vote and Electoral College, Trump said his administration has a clear mandate to enact its agenda as he prepares to take office on Monday.
