Trump starts appointing high-profile candidates to his cabinet
President-elect Donald Trump has started to appoint his cabinet ahead of his return to the White House in January.
Florida Senator Marco Rubio is reportedly in talks to become secretary of state whilst Florida congressman Michael Waltz is being lined up as national security advisor, according to sources, and other Trump loyalists have been put in key positions.
Having already won the presidency and the Senate, the GOP is on course to taking full control of Congress as they are out ahead in the race to control the House of Representatives.
President Joe Biden and Donald Trump will meet on Wednesday in the Oval Office, where the president will congratulate Trump on his victory. “President Biden expressed his commitment to ensuring a smooth transition and emphasised the importance of working to bring the country together,” the official said Wednesday.
Other key roles appointed:
- Homan was selected by Trump to be his “border tsar” – taking on a wide-ranging role overseeing border security and deportation policy
- Elise Stefanik, a New York congresswoman and vocal Trump defender in Congress, has been tapped to be the US ambassador to the United Nations
- Lee Zeldin, a former congressman, has been chosen to lead the Environmental Protection Agency
- Susie Wiles first woman chief of staff
