Former President Donald Trump drew harsh criticism from both sides of the aisle after he posted a message calling to ‘terminate’ the Constitution.
In a message posted on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump called for his reinstation or a new election. ‘A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles, even those found in the Constitution,’ he wrote. ‘Our great “Founders” did not want, and would not condone, False & Fraudulent Elections!’
Trump’s comments were made in the wake of a report by Substack writer Matt Taibbi, which detailed how Twitter employees responded to a New York Post story about Hunter Biden’s laptop in 2020.
Critics of the former president were quick to rebuke this statement.
‘Attacking the Constitution and all it stands for is anathema to the soul of our nation,’ the White House stated. ‘You cannot only love America when you win,’ White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates said.
‘Republicans are going to have to work out their issues with the former president and decide whether they’re going to break from him and return to some semblance of reasonableness or continue to lean in to the extremism, not just of Trump, but Trumpism,’ said Representative Hakeem Jeffries, who is set to succeed Nancy Pelosi as the Democratic Minority Leader.
Many of Trump’s fellow Republicans also condemn his remarks.
‘Suggesting the termination of the Constitution is not only a betrayal of our Oath of Office, it’s an affront to our Republic,’ Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski stated on Twitter.
‘The Constitution is set for a reason, to protect the rights of every American,’ newly elected New York Republican Representative Mike Lawler said. ‘I think the former president would be well-advised to focus on the future, if he is going to run for president again.’
‘The Constitution is greater than any President. End of story,’ Elon Musk said in response to the news. Musk is not a registered Republican, but has expressed support for conservative candidates and policies recently, including stating that he would vote for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis if he were to run in the 2024 presidential election.
