Travel: Brits jet off on holiday, including amber list countries as fears remain over Indian Covid-19 variant
British holidaymakers have packed up and started to fly out on a much-needed holiday. But some Brits are heading to amber list destinations, as restrictions ease for England, Wales and most of Scotland.
Travel firms say there has been a massive rise in demands for trips to Portugal after it was added to the green list. The green list is countries in which travellers do not need to self-isolate when they return and are only required to take one post-arrival Covid-19 test.
However, some passengers on Monday morning were travelling to amber list countries despite all the warnings from ministers and health experts against travelling to amber and red list countries.
Matt Hancock told Times Radio on Sunday: “The red and amber list countries are places that you shouldn’t go to unless you have an absolutely compelling reason.”
The traffic light system
Green list: Portugal, Gibraltar, Israel, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Brunei, Iceland and the Faroe Islands, plus several small remote islands that are British Overseas Territories. Travellers returning from any of these countries do not need to quarantine, and will only be required to take one post-arrival test.
Amber list: Spain, France, Italy and Greece. You should not travel to these destinations. Those who go against that guidance must take two post-arrival tests, and are also required to self-isolate at home for 10 days, although they can reduce that time if they take an additional negative test on day-five.
Red list: Brazil, India, South Africa, Turkey, the UAE and the Maldives are among the countries on this list. Those returning from a red list country must stay in a quarantine hotel for 11 nights at a cost of £1,750.
