Tottenham’s transfer plans are set to be at the heart of discussions with Antonio Conte as the club resumes contract talks with their boss this week.
Spurs are keen to agree an extension to Conte’s current deal, which ends in the summer, but know they must convince him he will receive the backing he wants in the transfer market.
Negotiations reportedly started before the World Cup in Qatar and are now set to resume in a bid to keep hold of the Italian, whose side are fourth in the Premier League.
Conte has spoken several times, including during a poor run of results before the World Cup, of how he wants Spurs to match his ambitions and to further strengthen the squad.
It is thought Spurs are looking to bring in at least two players next month. Reports this week suggested they are planning to bid for Sporting Lisbon’s Spanish full-back Pedro Porro.
Conte, whose team finished fourth in the league last season, has said: ‘We need to go step by step and have time and patience and have two or three transfer markets to bring this squad to be competitive to play in two competitions like the Premier League and Champions League.
‘The club understands very well the importance of bringing players, important players, in January or in the summer. This season will be much more difficult than last season because after the transfer market you have seen many teams have improved a lot.
‘We have to manage very well this situation and overcome it together. This squad doesn’t allow [me] to lose four players. We know the path is long and the difference with the other teams is, in my opinion…there is this gap.’
