Tom Holland has been defended by fans from homophobic backlash over a sex scene in The Crowded Room.
After receiving poor reviews, The Crowded Room was eventually praised over a moment when Holland’s character Danny reflects on past moments while being interrogated over his involvement in a 1979 New York City shooting.
At one point, Danny goes to a club and meets a guy before they head to a toilet cubicle and have sex.
While the moment set social media alight with praise, it also encouraged bigots to plague Twitter with homophobic remarks.
For every grim comment, however, there was others leaping to the Marvel star’s defence.
‘It only took Tom Holland doing one gay scene for Twitter to explode into homophobic rants, fragile masculinity & toxic behaviour,’ wrote on fan.

‘People need to find some peace, that hate is pathetic and quite literally killing young men.’
Another agreed: ‘People making homophobic jokes about this need to understand that the hallmark of a good actor is letting yourself be open to new roles that challenge you.
‘Tom Holland has been typecast a lot in his career but I applaud him for taking a risk and doing something different.’
‘The way how y’all are responding to Tom Holland acting in a f**king SHOW is beyond juvenile and homophobic,’ fumed a third, and their cries were thankfully echoed by so many others.
Holland, 27, himself admitted he felt ‘broken’ after filming The Crowded Room and needed a break from acting altogether.
‘I love the learning curve of becoming a producer. I’m no stranger to hard work. I’ve always sort of lived by this idea that hard work is good work,’ he told Extra.
‘I really enjoyed it, but then again, the show did break me. There did come a time where I was sort of like, “I need to have a break,” I disappeared.’
The Crowded Room is available to stream on Apple TV.
