Today’s news summary – Paper Talk

Tuesday’s front pages report on a variety of stories. A few stories about the migrant boat crossings feature on a few of the papers.

    EU rejects deal

The Times reports that the EU has rejected the UK government’s attempts to reach a new deal for the return of migrants who arrive in the UK via unauthorised routes. The paper says it has seen official notes of a meeting, suggesting the pact is not being entertained by Brussels.

The Daily Express’s headline reads: “Dear France … for £480 can you actually stop the boats?”. The paper carries a warning from Tory MPs that the French must go “faster and further” to stop migrant small boars after being promised that sum from Britain.

The Guardian leads with news that dissident Republicans have data from the PSNI data leak. The paper says it has “deepened anxiety” that paramilitaries will use the information to threaten to attack officers and to deter police recruitment – especially among Catholics.

The Daily Telegraph reports on the Covid inquiry, as the children’s commissioner for England is asking the inquiry to put young people’s views “at the heart” of its investigation.

The Daily Mirror reports on a girl who was attacked by a “Bully-type” dog on the street in Stockton-on-Tees, in County Durham. The paper says the five-year-old was left with horrific injuries and there are demands  for a change in the law to deal with what the paper calls the “killer dogs’ crisis.”

The Metro’s front page features Monday’s story that the NHS in England is considering scrapping the target for cancer patients to be seen by a specialist in two weeks. It quotes a leading oncologist saying the idea is “ominous and deeply worrying”. NHS bosses say the current range of targets are “outdated” because of new diagnostic techniques, the Metro reports.
