Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
England’s Lionesses feature prominently on most of Wednesday’s front pages after they beat China 6-1 to secure the top of the group spot and book their place in the last-16. England will face Nigeria in the knock-out stage next week.
England thrash China
The Times leads with an image of Alex Greenwood and Lauren James with the paper noting James’ performance was spectacular. The Guardian says James led the Lionesses to their 6-1 victory and the i newspaper says it’s time to start believing England can go all the way and win the World Cup. The Financial Times and Daily Express also report on England’s last-16 place on the front splash.
Water down net-zero rules
The Times and The Telegraph both report Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch to water down net-zero rules which are to come into force for carmakers in January.
The Bank of England is to raise its main interest rate not only tomorrow but also in September, November and December, according to the lead story in the i newspaper. The paper fears Britain is heading into a recession.
The Daily Express reports on the biggest fall in house prices in 14 years, claiming experts believe the worst is over and predict a market resurgence next year.
Away from the economy, many papers – including the Mirror and the Daily Star – highlight claims by TV judge Anton Du Beke, who says he was stabbed by his father when he was younger.
