Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
Monday’s front pages lead with a range of stories. There are several stories on the Russian war – Putin wants peace talks, Moscows bombings as well as the latest from Downing Street.
Moscow bombings
The Financial Times reports on the Moscow drone attack, leading with an image showing workers dismantling debris on a damaged skyscraper in Moscow. The Metro reports on the “bombshell” remarks from Russian President Vladimir Putin who said he does not reject the idea of peace talks with Ukraine. The paper also reports on the Moscow drone attack, saying the tables have turned in the conflict.
‘Backsliding’ on climate
The FT’s lead story reports the government is “backsliding on its climate agenda”. The paper says the government has made it cheaper for companies to pollute in the country by “watering down” reforms to the carbon market.
Motoring policies
Several papers report on the government’s motoring policies. The Sun urges the PM to “get a move on” to end the “war on motorists” while the Guardian reports that ministers are considering restricting councils’ ability to impose 20-mile-an-hour speed limits – part of what the paper calls a shift against “green policies.”
The Express says electric cars imported from China could present a major security risk. The paper warns that up to 300,000 vehicles could be immobilised remotely by officials in China.
The Times reports on the barge the government wants to use to house migrants from the Channel. The paper says the barge is yet to pass fire safety checks. Sources tell the paper the barge has the potential to be a “floating Grenfell.”
