Wednesday’s front pages report on a variety of political stories and calls for tougher penalties to deal with climate protesters after recent disruptions to sporting events.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has expressed concern about the state of the NHS, to the Daily Telegraph, stating that it is “broken” and criticising the “collapse of general practice”. He referred to Labour research which revealed that one in five A&E patients attend hospital because they cannot obtain a GP appointment.
Speaking to the i newspaper, Starmer has proposed reintroducing Tony Blair-style targets to improve waiting times, and hospitals and ambulance services will be held accountable if they fail to meet these targets.
Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary James Cleverly spoke to the Guardian, cautioning against closing the door on China, arguing that Britain must engage with the country to maintain its influence. He has criticised Conservative hawks for their simplistic approach of treating Beijing solely as a threat or an opportunity.
The Daily Mirror has expressed scepticism regarding the government’s plans to ban more types of knives, arguing that similar promises have been made by several Conservative Home Secretaries to no avail. The Daily Mail and The Sun have called for tougher penalties to deal with climate protesters after recent disruptions, with The Sun advocating for “unsympathetic judges and meaningful jail terms”.
The Times has highlighted the results of a “landmark” medical trial which indicates that type 2 diabetes is reversible, with patients on a “soup and shake” diet for three months being found to be free from symptoms five years later.
