Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
There’s a variety of stories on the front pages this Monday. Some papers report on judges at the European Court of Human Rights who reportedly are close to backing down over blocking flights carrying asylum seekers from the UK to Rwanda.
Elsewhere, the takeover of Credit Suisse and Boris Johnson’s PartyGate Commons committee – where he’ll deny he knowingly misled parliament, also make the front splashes.
The Financial Times reports that the takeover of Credit Suisse will solidify UBS’s position as the world’s largest wealth manager. Meanwhile, The Telegraph suggests that the deal could discourage the Bank of England from raising interest rates, as it would put pressure on weak lenders. City AM’s front page features a Saint Bernard dog, using the headline “It’s a Swiss rescue.”
The Independent and Metro both focus on former Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s upcoming appearance before a parliamentary committee, where he plans to deny knowingly misleading parliament. The Times reports that Johnson is preparing to go on the attack in a written defence, claiming bias from the committee, a move criticised by some Tory MPs.
The Daily Mail, Daily Express, and The Sun claim that judges in Strasbourg who previously blocked a flight taking migrants to Rwanda are on the brink of backing down.
The Metropolitan Police could be broken up if it doesn’t address its “toxic culture,” according to a report to be published by The Times. The Sun reports that the Met is giving out phones to its officers but will monitor them for “bad behaviour.”
