Thursday’s front pages lead with a variety of stories, from an investigation into British gas to the latest from the Conservative party. Several of the papers feature images of striking teachers, a day after Britain experienced its biggest industrial action in decades.
Striking teachers
The Daily Telegraph is one of the papers that features an image of striking teachers. “Schools out – and no homework” is how the paper headlines the story. The Daily Mail says ministers are planning a new law to stop what it calls the “school strike mayhem”.
Whilst the Metro highlights the cost of strikes in various sectors to the economy, saying since the summer it has reached £2bn. The Sun’s editorial asks: “Where would you find the billions for inflation-busting public sector rises?
But the left-wing Daily Mirror says those striking were forced to take action because the government doesn’t value the public sector and those who work in it.
UK politics latest
Some of the papers lead with the latest political news, with the cost of living and the PM’s plans to stop illegal crossings taking the front splashes of several papers.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak writes in The Sun that readers should judge him on his 1000th day in office – at the next election. The paper highlights his plans for a new law to stop small boats crossing the Channel.
The i newspaper reports on the former prime minister Liz Truss, saying she is planning a “comeback” that could cause “Tory infighting.” Katy Balls writes in the paper that neither Ms Truss or Boris Johnson believe their careers are over and are both likely to be a “thorn in Rishi Sunak’s side” ahead of the next general election.
The Daily Telegraph reports the government is drawing up plans to put job coaches into GP surgeries to push unemployment over-50s back towards work.
The cost of living crisis leads the Daily Star – as it claims the crisis has hit the tooth fairy as a new survey says the average payment for a tooth is £1.90 down from £2.10 five years ago.
