Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
Monday’s newspapers are dominated by what the Metro calls a “sleaze storm” in the Tory party, with many leading with Nadhim Zahawi’s tax row and Boris Johnson’s loan allegations.
Boris Johnson is pictured on most front pages.
Sleaze storm in Tory party
The Metro calls it a “sleaze storm” whilst the Daily Mirror’s front page has a “useful guide for Tories” telling Nadhim Zahawi to pay his taxes, Rishi Sunak to wear a seatbelt and Boris Johnson to go to a bank if he needs a loan.
Nadhim Zahawi is facing the first calls from Tory MPs for him to resign, according to the Daily Telegraph.
The Daily Express leads with an image of Boris Johnson, saying he is a “true friend” of Ukraine and is “back on the front line” campaigning for more tanks to repel Russian invaders.
The Times also features a picture of Boris Johnson in Ukraine – but the paper argues the former prime minister is trying “to shift attention away” from the loan allegations.
Whilst the Metro leads on the allegations made against Boris Johnson. The paper reports on the claims the chairman of the BBC, Richard Sharp, helped the former PM secure a loan guarantee, weeks before Boris Johnson recommended him for the role. Both men deny any wrongdoing. But the Metro says Boris Johnson “popped up in war-torn Ukraine as yet another sleaze row erupts”.
Prince Andrew to fight claims
The Sun says it’s understood Prince Andrew has set aside £10m – thought to have been inherited from the late Queen – to launch a legal case against a woman who accused him of sexual assault. The paper says Andrew will argue he never met Virginia Giuffre and that a photo of the pair together has been faked.
The Guardian’s front page says Brexit is partly responsible for making the UK 15 years late on David Cameron’s pledge to export a trillion pounds worth of goods and services each year by 2020. The paper says the value of exports is due to fall next year – and reaching the goal will now take until 2035.
