Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
Thursday’s front pages feature a variety of stories, however a picture of the Princess of Wales is featured on several of the papers – the papers conclude Princess Kate has ‘put on a brave face’ after the release of Prince Harry’s memoir.
UK newspaper front pages
The Telegraph leads with Sir James Dyson who heavily criticises the government’s approach to the economy, calling it “short-sighted” and “stupid.” He argues is keeping Britain in a state of “Covid inertia”. Dyson says “growth” has become a dirty word under Sunak and criticises business regulations and taxes. The paper says the Treasury believes the best way to trigger growth is to bring down inflation.
The Daily Mail also leads on government policy. The paper carries a warning from Tory MPs to Jeremy Hunt saying he must cut taxes in the Spring budget or risk losing the next election.
The claims that the southeast of England will receive more regeneration money than the North East, Yorkshire and the West Midlands, leads the Times. MPs in the “red wall areas” tell the paper that the government is “making a mockery” of levelling up.
NHS strikes and ‘crass’ Tory MP comments
The Guardian leads with the upcoming disruptions to the NHS next month as nurses and ambulance staff are set to strike in England and Wales. A senior NHS leader warns the paper that hospitals will “grind to a halt” as doctors and nurses from other departments are deployed to provide emergency cover in the relevant departments.
The Daily Mirror reports on Tory MP Simon Clarke’s comments – he accused nurses using foodbanks of “not budgeting properly.” The paper calls his remarks “crass” and say they have been branded “out of touch” by RCN.
