Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
Most of Thursday’s front pages lead on PM Rishi Sunak’s New Year speech.
The Daily Mail and Daily Express focus on his comments that he be judged on his results. The Mail says his premiership is staked on delivering the five-point plan.
The left leaning Guardian notes the PM appears to have acknowledged that his time in Downing Street will be defined by how he handles the many crises facing the country.
The Times’ leader column welcomes Rishi Sunak’s speech as “refreshing” and “encouraging.” The paper suggests his pledges are “measurable” and offer a “dose of realism.”
The Sun remarks his plan is “laudable and essential.”
The politically left Daily Mirror’s editorial describes the speech as “vacuous” with “woolly pledges” and “corny buzzwords.”
There’s also scepticism from the Daily Star – likening his aims to those of Blackadder’s hapless sidekick, Baldrick.
“Largely meaningless,” is the Daily Telegraph’s headline on the PM’s economic goals. Whilst the paper’s editorial says “Britain requires shock therapy, not gentle reforms.”
Starmer’s speech draw on Blairite themes
Both the Telegraph and the Financial Times look ahead to Sir Keir Starmer’s speech. The Telegraph suggests his vow not to get the “big government chequebook out again” is a message designed to be a break from the rhetoric of previous Labour leaders.
The FT claims Sir Keir will draw on Blairite themes with his push for radical reform of public services.
