Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
Christmas strikes, Matt Hancock and Prince Harry are the biggest talking points for this morning’s front pages.
Christmas strike chaos
“It’s beginning to look a lot like … a Christmas general strike,” says the Daily Mail. The paper says Border Force staff at some major airports became the latest group of workers to announce strikes over Christmas.
The Times reports airlines are being told to cancel up to 30% of flights on strike days to prevent what the paper calls “chaos in airport arrival halls.”
The Financial Times says Rishi Sunak has vowed to bring in “new tough laws” to limit the impact of strikes.
That news has been welcomed by the Daily Express which says it’s good to see the PM “talking tough” – but says it wants to see his “words translated into action.”
Unions are urging ministers to take part in negotiations, according to the Guardian, saying if they want to resolve the disputes they must address what is causing them.
The Telegraph meanwhile reports the government is planning to introduce the Army to help cover striking workers – a move that has sparked “fury.” The paper says senior military figures believe soldiers shouldn’t “be ordered to give up Christmas”.
Matt Hancock won’t stand as MP at next election
Most of Thursday’s papers report on the announcement that former Health Secretary Matt Hancock won’t stand as an MP at the next general election – due in 2025.
Both the Daily Mirror and the Daily Express refer to Hancock’s appearance in the ITV I’m A Celebrity jungle. The papers use the headline: “Get me out of here.”
Harry and Meghan Netflix show
The papers – published before the documentary aired – report on the series from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
“Heir we go again,” says the Daily Mirror. The Guardian says the royal family will be bracing themselves for the Netflix show and says the trailers make it clear that race will be explored in the show and media intrusion is likely another subject.
