Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
Monday’s front pages report heavily on England’s 3-0 win over Senegal to book their place in the quarter-final. Photos of Harry Kane, Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka make the front splashes.
England beat Senegal 3-0
“Three-mendous!” declares the Daily Mail’s headline. “Now for Le Showdown with France,” says the paper.
“Three … and easy,” says the Guardian, as England saw off Senegal. The paper features a picture of Harry Kane embracing Phil Foden -and Bukayo Saka, after he scored England’s third goal.
The Daily Telegraph goes with the same headline and calls England “Magnifique” after their “convincing win.”
England to face France in quarter-finals
“Here Oui Go!” is the Metro’s headline. The paper nods to the upcoming French game in the quarter-final. The front page shows the players cheering and fist-pumping – and their manager Gareth Southgate, clapping from the sidelines – after what the paper calls a “nervy” first 30 minutes.
The Daily Express says “We’re ready!” as its headline. The paper says captain Harry Kane is relishing a “battle” with the French – the defending World Cup champions. Kane scored his first goal in the 2022 Qatar tournament.
The Daily Mirror calls it a “Dream World” and nods to the 1966 World Cup win – as well as the festive season – proclaiming: “It’s coming ho-home.”
Raheem Sterling flies home
“Roarsome,” says the Sun’s headline. The front page story however leads to Raheem Sterling who missed yesterday’s game due to a family emergency. The football star has flown home to England after an armed gang raided his home whilst his partner and their two kids were inside. England boss Gareth Southgate has said there will be room in the squad if Raheem returns to Qatar.
